The Best Way to Boost Your Morning Smoothie

by: BRIDGET CONLIN

Superfoods are the celebrities of the food world. They have one hit song that plays on the radio that plays for 4 weeks straight and then they’re gone—quietly famous but still always around, trying to find their way back into the spotlight. “Superfood” isn’t exactly a scientific term, but it refers to a food that is generally known for being packed full of vitamins and nutrients that are considered beneficial for your health and well-being. Some superfoods you have most likely heard of, or your mom has put on the dinner table, are kale, acai, goji berries, chia seeds—the list goes on (and on). But much like we knew Cardi B wasn’t going to be a one-hit wonder (we called that one, guys), we’re also calling the next superfood celebrity—Moringa.

Without even knowing of its several health benefits, I was partial to Moringa due to the fact that its name sounds like a beautiful, exotic dance, no? Then, I learned that it’s, like, really good for you. It is not a dance, in fact, it is a plant that is packed full of nutrients with tissue-repairing properties, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory powers. The plant has been used for generations in countries such as India, Nepal and Pakistan to treat diseases and aid in overall health function. If you need further convincing to incorporate Moringa into your diet, check the facts below for a summary of its superhuman capabilities and why it is, in fact, the next Cardi B.

Moringa will basically make you smarter

Moringa supports brain health and cognitive function because of its antioxidant and neuro-enhancer activities. It has been shown to improve your memory and mood, and can improve mental health overall. School is no match for moringa.

No more cravings at school

Moringa helps lower your blood sugar, which helps get rid of unnecessary cravings. When you have high blood sugar, your body will consistently crave energy from simple carbs like candy, soda, cereal and juice—all the things we don’t want. In addition, fluctuations in blood sugar can cause the light-headedness you might feel when you stand up. Moringa can help steady your blood sugar and get rid of that experience.

You basically never have to take a multivitamin again

No matter what your Mom says! Moringa is very nutrient-dense. It’s almost as if Ritual Vitamins grew on trees. It is high in protein, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Iron, Riboflavin, Vitamin A, and Magnesium. Not sure what these letters and numbers will do for you? We’ve explained it all for you here.

Your body will feel less ~puffy~

You know the feeling I’m talking about, where everything is just a little bit inflamed—from your cheeks that look slightly chipmunk-y, to your fingers that aren’t quite fitting in your rings. But what even is inflammation? For our current purposes, what you need to know is that inflammation can lead to diabetes, respiratory problems, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and obesity. Moringa reduces this inflammation, and therefore lowers your risk of those health problems. It will also help get those rings back on your fingers.

So, what are the best ways to use Moringa?

Add it to your morning smoothie

We recommend adding ½-1 teaspoon of Moringa into your smoothie in the morning. Try following the recipe below for a delicious, healthy and filling Moringa smoothie!

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
  • ½ teaspoon moringa
  • 1 teaspoon matcha
  • 1 cup almond milk
Optional:
  • 1 tbsp MCT oil
  • 1 scoop protein powder (we love this collagen powder!)
  • 1 tsp maca powder
Make Moringa tea

Add ½ tablespoon of Moringa powder to your morning tea, but remember that it has a light earthy taste so you may want to add a tablespoon of honey to sweeten!

Morning Moringa muffins—A dream

Follow this quick, 5-minute gluten-free muffin recipe and add 1-2 tablespoons of Moringa—you won’t taste it, but you’ll get the health benefits. That’s a win-win in our books.
