The Do's and Don'ts of After-School Relaxation

We totally get it. The most comforting thing when you get home from school is throwing on some sweats, grabbing a snack (chips, cookies, granola bar, whatever), turning on Netflix and just relaxing. Unfortunately, we’re here to be the bearer of bad news… That routine definitely isn’t the best for your personal health and well-being. In fact, there are certain things you should be doing after school that will help you feel just as relaxed, but will actually make you healthier, happier and fitter.

To help you out, we’ve compiled a list of do’s and don’ts for after-school relaxation techniques.

  1. 1. Turn on the TV.

Sorry to say it, but the most recent episode of Riverdale on Netflix is just going to have to wait. Your mind has been busy working and thinking all day at school, that last thing you want to do is go home and stimulate it further with electronic images and noise. You should ask yourself, what do you want to fill your subconscious with? Our subconscious mind creates thoughts based on what we interact with on a daily basis. Why fill your mind with meaningless junk on TV, when you could fill it with intriguing and intellectual material in a book, for example. That’ll make you smarter, sharper, and more clear minded than your friends who come home and plop down on the couch for the evening.

2. Grab Junk Food from the Pantry

Think about it this way. When you get a new bag/backpack from school, or your mom agrees to buy you those new jeans you love, how do you treat them?? With the utmost love and care, right?! You don’t want to get them dirty, or ruin them, and you show them off to everyone. So why don’t you treat your body like that? When you get home from a long day of school you definitely deserve to treat yourself. But that “treat” shouldn’t mean junk food, give your body something it actually needs and wants! Keep reading for some ideas on what you should do instead.

  1. 3. Scroll Through Social Media

It’s so tempting to grab your phone and flick through Instagram or Facebook to see all  the ~very~ important stuff you’ve missed during the day. The reality is, though, you’ve already spent all day being “social”, surrounded by your friends and teachers. The last thing you need to do is go on social media and compare yourself to everyone else, and attempt to see what is going on in other people’s lives, when you haven’t even had a chance to focus on your own! Try and take some time to focus on yourself before you find your thumb double tapping on yet another Insta blogger in Bali.

4. Leave Your Makeup On!!

When you get home you should wash your face immediately to get all the gunk out that has been built up over the day. You should wash it again before going to bed, because between after-school and bedtime there will be a little more dirt built up. Don’t think that just because you’re not wearing makeup, you don’t have to wash your face. Dirt and bacteria can come from anything and anywhere! Trust us, your skin will thank you (and you’ll notice a difference!)

  1. 5. Sit Down All Night

You’ve been sitting all day already! Get up, get active, and do something fun. Maybe you’ve already had an after-school activity, in which case that’s awesome, and you’re ready to move on to the relaxation part of your evening. If not try taking your dog out for a walk, or maybe going outside to play a little volleyball in the backyard, or go hang out at a friend’s house for a little after you’re done your homework and before dinner. You need to relax and let loose! Being a teen isn’t all fun and games, we know.

  1. 1. Close Your Eyes and Breathe Deeply

School and after-school activities are stressful, we totally get it! Taking a moment just to decompress and relax when you get home can shift your entire mood for the night (and the next day). Often, when we get home we feel a little stressed, a little rushed, and a little tired. Those are cues that your body wants a moment to relax, so, grab a seat, close your eyes and take five deep breaths. Then, go on with your evening! Quick and easy.

2. Drink Water

We had to do it. You knew it was coming. Grab a glass right now. Right now. Do it. Read this article to remind you why!

3. Grab a Small Healthy Snack

Unless mom’s making dinner of course, in which case you should offer to help. If not, skip the chips, cookies, granola bars and other tempting junk food and instead try grabbing an apple, slicing it up and sprinkling some cinnamon on it. Another idea is cutting up some cheese and eating it with rice crackers. We’ll have some fun, easy ideas for after-school snacks up on the blog soon, don’t worry.

4. Take Off Any Uncomfortable Clothes

If you wear a uniform, or you’re wearing skinny jeans, have your hair in a tight pony or goodness knows what else, don’t punish yourself by keeping them on all night, go change!! You’re home now and can relax and putting comfy clothes on is the first way to do it.

  1. 5. Prepare For the Next Day

Your future self will thank you. If you get your outfit ready and your breakfast/lunch prepared the night before, you will thank yourself in the morning when your rushing out the door like a chicken with your head cut off. How is it that no matter how long you give yourself to get ready, you always end up cutting it to the very last minute?? We can’t figure it out either. So, lay a cute outfit out on your bed and put an easy breakfast and lunch in the fridge! In fact, we have some easy breakfast ideas for you already!
